Street Art – Banksy Canvas Art
Street art, as the word suggests is one of the most widely used forms of art that is exhibited in public places. The streets are platforms for artists. Apart from just art, it is used as a channel for activities like commercial advertising and to have good public relations. It serves as a communication portal. The most famous form of street art known to most of us is graffiti. One of the most famous UK Graffiti artists is Banksy and his graffiti canvas prints have become a hit in many homes across the UK. But there are some other forms that we do not know much about. They include sculptures, posters, stencils as well as murals.
Graffiti – An Important Tool of Street Art
“Graffiti” being an Italian word makes it clear that the origin of this art was found in Italy, Rome to be more precise. This art of using spray paint and creating imaginative images on walls and other public properties has come into existence long ago in the 4th century. Hard to believe, isn’t it? Sometimes, graffiti was just some mere scribbling of words and sometimes it was fully fledged pictures sprayed on walls. Young artists started forming groups and this kind of graffiti was called gang graffiti.
Graffiti – Then and Now
Since graffiti has been used for a long time, history has seen different phases of it. Initially, it served more as an archaeological asset because in ancient times people scribbled pictures and writing on walls to communicate with each other. In more recent times however, after the arrival of liquid sprays and spray cans, the whole purpose of graffiti has changed. It shows more of the pop culture and the easy going attitude of today’s youth and can also be used to make political and personal stand points.
Two Sides of the Coin
Apart from the aesthetic value of these spray paintings there is another aspect to it. The government, in particular declared that graffiti is a crime. If you are wondering why this is, it is because people used graffiti to make protests against the prevailing political scenarios. Sometimes, this went overboard and became offensive. Moreover, people used public property and using someone else’s property without their approval is a crime. Graffiti was considered a form of vandalism more than art.
It is Left to the Viewers’ Imaginations
Depending on “who” and “where”, graffiti can have a whole host of different meanings. Whether done on public walls or in subways or on trains the motive behind it is art. Only because it is used for controversial purposes sometimes, graffiti acquired negative publicity. Forgetting that, there were many artists who gained popularity for graffiti artworks. They were asked to work with advertising companies. In fact to encourage contemporary graffiti there are some festivals dedicated entirely to this art. Some of such festivals include Upfest in Europe and Roskilde festival in Denmark. This artistic form of self expression is now perceived differently by different people. It is entirely up to you to decide if it is vandalism or just another form of art that stands out from the crowd! Banksy Canvas Art has now become a massive hit with many young home owners that are looking to redecorate their homes with more contemporary artworks.
